I'll bet your modern computers still have an IDE cable inside, if only
for the DVD drive. Open one up and mount your old drive. If more
convenient, you can swap out the connection from an optical drive. If
it runs OK, just copy the contents into a folder on one of the
internal drives.
If it doesn't, you've just learnt why backups are necessary :-)He 'could' leave it in there. At that point, there will be no need to ever connect it back to the Win98 machine, although he may want to. In that case, he'll need a Win98 USB driver for the enclosure interface...probably downloadable from the manufacturer.
Alternatively, you can buy a USB adapter. No real need for a pretty
enclosure - the bare-bones type with just a cable and a power supply
will be fine. You'll only be needing to connect it once after all.
XP machines will recognize and mount the USB drive automatically.
You'll have no problem with format from a drive only 5 years old.
It's probably time to back up that drive no matter what route he takes. Five years is a long time in the life of a hard drive. I wish I could find a cheap copy of XP for this machine, which I've used for the last seven years, with periodic upgrading. It's perfectly capable of running it. While I don't have any particular problem with 98SE, I do have problems running the latest software and hardware. My DVD recorder is particularly cranky on 98SE; and many software packages are now 2k or XP at a minimum. There's also the bother of downloading a different USB driver for every thumb drive.
