Five years is a long time in the life of a hard drive. I wish I
could find a cheap copy of XP for this machine, which I've used for the
last seven years, with periodic upgrading. It's perfectly capable of
running it. While I don't have any particular problem with 98SE, I do
have problems running the latest software and hardware. My DVD recorder
is particularly cranky on 98SE; and many software packages are now 2k or
XP at a minimum. There's also the bother of downloading a different USB
driver for every thumb drive.

I'm currently building a Frankenstein ("That's _Frannkunsthseeen!!")
PC from body parts dating mid-00's.

As much as I appreciate the knowability of Win98SE, and prove my
love by typing here on the same P1 I've used since it had dual
Win3.1 and Win95 boots, my current experience is that the day of
Win98SE is very, very soon to be over. Drivers for an even coupla
year old hardware device aren't really available anymore.

USB flash drives, yada, yada, will just bug us hence, etc.

And, yeah, Win98SE is, comparatively, pretty much slippery as owl
*** on a doorknob, but keeping it running is really about to become
an issue. Major Bummer, but that ain't new news.

Thanks, as always,
