Proof once again of my great wisdom for reading
everything you post.

This explains some strange things I've been seeing lately
(with a striped total 160GB data drive) (because it was
free;
no good reason). I need to change back it to two 80GB
drives;
I'll do a mirror! cool.

Much thanks!

I'm always happy when my idle natterings actually help someone. ;-)

The worst thing about pre-XP systems is that they are
pretty much inherently wide-open for spyware and
viruses. It is thinkable to run a full-fixed XP system
on the web if you are careful - not a good idea but
thinkable. Not so with SE. I would run SE barefoot -
without add-on anti-spyware and anti-virus software,
only if the system were completely isolated from the
web. Of course, many dedicated audio systems are off
the web.

Might matter who has use of the computer.

Yes, that matters. For a while, XP was not suitable for use by free-download
hungry teenagers, even with the better anti-spyware and virus software
installed and up to date.

I'm sole user
of mine, have never used any anti-virus or any other
protection, and have never had a virus or other bug.

That takes some luck.

Maybe being on dial-up helps too. Not sure.

Well, dial-up vastly reduces the amount of time you're exposed to the fire.
I work in a community where maybe 80-90% of all homes have DSL or Cable
modems.

But I'm still planning to buy a copy of XP while the
gettin's good. There're none locally but NewEgg still has
some.

I suspect that XP will be the longest-running mainstream OS act during my
natural life.
