How can plugging an additional component into a power strip, without connecting that component to anything, cause a
turntable-and-phono-preamp in a receiver to begin buzzing?
Does the CD recorder have a switchmode power supply?
I would bet that it does, and that you are hearing hash from the SMPS.
Does the power switch on the CD recorder *really* break
the connection between the mains power and the supply
circuits? It seems possible that it is like most VCRs (and DVD recorders) which only turn off the front-panel display,
but remain powered-up whenever plugged-in.
If you had mentioned the make/model of the offending
component, we might be able to do some research.
Else, you could try separation and/or powerline filters
to mitigate the problem.
