I'm considering purchasing a bunch of middle atlantic UTR-1s but I want to
clarify some things first. (For those unfamiliar the UTR-1 is a 1RU shelf
with pre-drilled holes spaced to accomodate most 1/3 and 1/2 rack gear)
The head of the screw that is bolting a given piece of equipment to the
shelf will protrude from the bottom of the shelf. Does this not prevent one
from using the rack space immediately below? Or is the standard spacing such
that there is room to accomodate a typical screw head?
Yeah, that's a PITA unless the screws have very flat and shallow heads,
which usually means seeking out uncommon screws. Using the UTR-1 to
mount an RNC and a prototype of the Speck ASC, I scratched the top of my
GR MP2 sliding it into the space below. The rack shelf itself wasn't the
problem; it was the protruding screw heads that did it.
Prior to Vince offering rack shelves for the production ASC's, I bought
some Symetrix shelves intended for their kit. These are considerably
heavier gauge metal than the MA shelf and I was able to drill
countersunk holes into them. Then using flathead screws I have a flush
surface under the ASC's.
Also, is it common practice for manufacturers who make third or half-rack
components to make their equipment just under a full RU, in order to
compensate for/accomodate several milimeters of shelf underneath? Or is it
possible to encounter a scenario where I can't use the rack space
immediately above?
I don't if all partial-racksize stuff is that way, but the ASC's and the
RNC leave enough room for kit above. Right now in one 4-space SKB box
that I'm using a lot live I have the Great River pre on top, the ASC's
next, a Behringer 2496 next, and an Trip-Lite 12 outlet power strip in
the bottom space. So far the only problem is that the power strip is so
shallow that I find it difficult to hook other power plugs to it while
setting up for gigs. I'm going to try swapping units around, maybe
putting the strip at the top, to see if that helps.
