The disc must be spotlessly clean before you
even think about starting. You can also greatly
attenuate the breakfast cereal effect, by "playing
wet", with a solution 60% water, 40% isopropyl
alcohol,

Alcohol dissolves the laquer the record is made of.

Commercial pressings do not contain laquer, but alcohol will dissolve
the shellac binder and damage the surface.

Water and a trace of wetting agent (unperfumed shampoo) is generally
safe on solid stock pressings as long as it is removed immediately after
playing. There was often cotton flock in the mix, and I have heard
claims that it absorbs water, swells up and damages the surface if the
disc is left damp for too long.

The mix quantities for wet playing were given to me by
a colleague at the BBC trascription service. I have used it
for many years with no ill effects.

Did he know you wanted it for shellac pressings, or did he think you
were wetting vinyl with it? A lot of the later BBC transcriptions were
half-processed to vinyl, so the Nitrate masters were never played.

You may have been lucky that the Isopropanol evaporated quickly before
too much harm was done, but I would never let alcohol near a shellac
pressing unless I was actually intending to dissolve it.
