No one has pointed out that, apart from the gain before feedback
issue, the SM 58 is designed as a hand held vocal mic with a massive
cut below 200 Hz to balance proximity effect with lips touching

It is utterly inappropriate for use at a distance to mic anything. The
resulting sound would have almost no content below 200 Hz.

If you want to go cheap, the SM 57 is the same thing without the low
cut and would at least be in the ballpark.

For this sort of thing (on a budget) I would go with ORTF pairs of
cheap hypercardiods (like Oktava 012s) to cover zones and use wireless
where essential.

Actually, both the Shure SM58 and SM57 have extreme cutoff below
100Hz. In fact, if the Shure frequency response curves are to be
believed, the SM 57 has even more of a rolloff than the 58.I wouldn't
use either to distance mic anything. That being said, I believe that
the SM57 is the better SOUNDING microphone, probably due to the
difference in the grilles.

I use hyper or super cardioid microphones when gain before feedback is
of paramount importance.

I wont use either 58s or 57s for this choir. The last sound guy proved that.

I think I may indeed have to use some wireless hopefully as little as 4
which I hope wont be too much of a handfull.

For overheads looking at
Rode nt5 or nt55
Akg 747
Oktava mk012 mkII.

Any good wireless suggestions if it is limited at 4 at a time.
