No one has pointed out that, apart from the gain before feedback
issue, the SM 58 is designed as a hand held vocal mic with a massive
cut below 200 Hz to balance proximity effect with lips touching
screen.
It is utterly inappropriate for use at a distance to mic anything. The
resulting sound would have almost no content below 200 Hz.
If you want to go cheap, the SM 57 is the same thing without the low
cut and would at least be in the ballpark.
For this sort of thing (on a budget) I would go with ORTF pairs of
cheap hypercardiods (like Oktava 012s) to cover zones and use wireless
where essential.
