LPs often get really noisy after being played wet. I'm not sure exactly
why, but the disease is painful enough that further investigation is not
what I want to do.

This issue was discussed and resolved about 30 years ago.

Some company that made pickups (Ortofon, IIRC) did a bit of research and
discovered the following... When the stylus runs through the groove, there's
enough friction to heat the stylus and slightly melt the plastic. The
plastic deforms slightly, then returns to more or less its original shape
after passing the stylus.

When the record is wet, there's enough of a cooling effect that the plastic
does not melt or deform. The stylus sort-of sticks to it, and occasionally
causes cracking or even pulls out little bits of plastic.

Regardless, you don't want to play an LP wet. In fact, you should let it
air-dry a few minutes after cleaning it.
