I would have thought that playing wet was a good way of extracting all
the crap from the grooves while washing in mild detergent. Why would
this render them unplayable dry?

LPs often get really noisy after being played wet. I'm not sure exactly why,
but the disease is painful enough that further investigation is not what I
want to do.
