Help please with MS technique

I'm experimenting with M/S. But running into
some confusion.
Behringer LDC for the side signals in figure 8 mode
(it has two elements)
Audio Technica AT3528 SDC for the mid signal.
Record them both to a Korg D-888 multi track.
Sound source is an archtop jazz guitar. I'm
recording the guitar pickup through a DI
as well but that track is muted while I'm
experimenting with the MS mics.
Per a description on this Newsgroup by Paul,
I made a copy of the Side signal wav, and inverted it.
Now in my cooledit I've got ONE mid signal and TWO
side signals, one side signal is inverted.
But the side signals seem to cancel, like you'd expect
from a single mic source that was inverted and added
to the original, non inverted wav. The waveforms are almost
an exact mirror image of each other.
Not holding my mouth right?
