But back to computers and recording for a sec before I go . Compaq
lied to me about the ram capacity of that old box, which as it turns
out , can only take 512, which is what it had/has. So I decided to
just flippin' buy another , newer, computer , and fudgicate all this
headbanging and fingerwringing . A used Dell Optiplex GX260.
P4 2.4ghz chip, 256 ram , $150 U.S.A. Upgrade 1 gig ram for $100
for a sweet total of $250 .
The Optiplex is pretty proprietary.... it's a lot like an overgrown laptop
since it's a 'desktop' and not a tower. It's really cramped on the inside.
You aren't going to like this, but I just sold one a year ago because I was
having trouble configuring an outside audio card. All the goodies... audio,
video, LAN, modem, USB, etcetera, are built onto the motherboard in the
GX260. It was made for 2K but it will take XP just fine and Dell provides
all of the XP drivers. (If you have video 'resource' issues with XP after
installing a peripheral PCI card, drop me an e-mail and I'll help you re-
configure resources - been there, done that).
Only room for one drive. Oh well .
Refurbs from Dell usually come with a 40 Gig drive... partition it. ;-)
Cheers,

Yeah it's cramped but fortunately I don't have much to add, just the
soundcard
(m-audio ap 2496) . Hopefully the two will mate sucessfully. The guy I
bought it from
is very cool, and I think would take it back if I had real trouble .
I'll see what happens sooner
rather than later, and thanks for the offer of support . It came with
XP on it
(this guy puts that on all the used ones he sells) , maybe that will
help .
Cool ! ( ...I hope (^:# )
Dar
.
