Re: Roland digital piano output to computer sound card

I want to record piano performances from my digital piano (Roland
MP-300) into Cakewalk or other music editing software via my
Revolution 7.1 sound card.

1) My MP-300 has both MIDI input/out ports, and audio input/output
jacks. Which should I use if sending output to a computer soundcard?

If you're going to be playing the piano and recording that
performance, you'll use the audio output jacks.

2) My couputer soundcard, Revolution 7.1, has a bunch of jacks on my
CPU, which are shown on the specifications, but I'm not sure which of
them should receive the input from the MP-300.

Use the Analog Line In jack. That's the blue one.

3) After I answer #1 question and #2 question above, how do I describe
the cable I'll need, when I go to Radio Shack to buy it?

I don't think that Radio Shack carries exactly what you want, but they
have an appropriate cable and adapters. You need a 1/8" stereo plug on
the computer end and two 1/4" phone plugs on the keyboard end.

Radio Shack #42-2483 has a 1/8" stereo plug to two RCA phone plugs
Radio Shack #274-320 is a two-pack of RCA-to-1/4" phone plug adapters

There are a few other ways to skin this cat from Radio Shack cables
and adapters. This is the most straightforward and doesn't put the
weight of a heavy adapter and cable on a tiny plug.

I don't know why it is so hard to find answers or how-to information,
but I'm getting really frustrated and am on the verge of giving up my
project entirely.

Because this is just one of those things that everybody is supposed to
know. How does anyone learn to operate a computer? Or a cell phone?
"For Dummies" books only go so far. There's a lot of good general
information about audio connections and how things work in the Mackie
Compact Mixer Reference Guide which you can download a chapter at a
time from http://www.mackie.com/support/compactmixer/index.html or you
can order a printed copy (which I would recommend - it's so much
easier to study).
