Yes but you're up against the same problem... you need a USB mass storage driver. Actually if you got a card reader with WIN98 drivers you could probably use the drivers direct on the Edirol. That might be a way of getting them. On the other hand it might not work at all.

Even XP isn't bombproof with card readers and cameras - I keep having to get into the device manager, press the "repopulate" button and see which drive letter it's decided to assign today...

My Edirol R-09 works perfectly as a standard USB mass storage device on Linux.
