I just bought an M-Audio MobilePre to be my *only* audio
interface into my PC. I'm not sure I like it and I'm
thinking of getting something else a bit better, but I'm
on a budget.

Why don't you like it?

Features?

Function?

Sound quality?
I'm having an issue with levels, but I think I already
figured out what the problem is there.

Issue with levels?

I'll try it when I
get home tonight and see if things improve. I also
noticed a buzzing sound, but I'm not sure where that's
coming from. I thought it might be coming from this unit.
It's fairly loud, relatively speaking, and a bit
annoying. It will take a bit more research to determine
of that noise is actually making it onto my recordings or
if it's just present during playback. I'll be really
pissed if that buzz is present in my recordings. If the
buzz isn't that unit then I have no idea what it could
be. It would have to be something inside my PC, I guess,
which seems a little odd.

A buzz no way has to be something inside your PC. More likely, it is a
grounding problem.

Besides, this unit is 16-bit/48 KHz. For another $50 I
can get one that is 24-bit/96 KHz. then again, I may just
wait and spend an additional $100-150 and get something
with even better converters and more interfaces.

And the audible difference between 16/48 and 24/96 would be what?

Not necessarily any difference that I coudl hear, but it's got higher
numbers. And higher is better, right?

(And yes, I'm joking.)

Seriously, I was thinking of replacing this module simply because of
the noise I was hearing. Then I noticed that for very little more
money I could get an arguably better outboard interface with better
specs and lower internal noise.

I'm not convinced the buzzing noise is the module, but I sure hope it
is. If that noise was coming from my PC then I'm in trouble. I figured
out how to fix the problem i was having with levels, so I'll play
around some more to see if the noise is still a problem once I learn a
bit more about how my new system works.
