Re: MOTU vs. RME, Sound Devices portable interface

Personally I wouldn't upgrade to a G5. The G5 requires the PCI424 card
to run MOTU hardware, (unless you decide to go with FireWire
interfaces,) but the newer Intel based Macs use PCI-x cards. If you're
going to upgrade, I'd go with the current hardware & bypass the last
of the PowerPC processors altogether, unless you need to keep expenses
really low & are going to get a used unit. The G5 is faster than the
G4, but not like night & day faster. I still spend a lot of time
waiting for saves, crossfades & screen redraws on a dual processor
2.5gig G5. People are reporting huge CPU boosts with the Intel CPUs
over the G4/G5 processors, using DP.

Thanks for the insight, Scott. I misspoke when I said I would
eventually upgrade to a G5 - I was thinking that the new Intel
machines were still called G5 (they look like a G5). I will
definitely go with the new Intel machines - probably the newest and
fastest available when I get there. I do really need some increase in
power from my 450 mhz G4. It's too slow to do all the work I want to
do if I upgrade to OSX. Although it still works surprisingly well
with old software (I also use DP3 and OS 9 with it).

It's really hard to tell how fussy I want to get with mic pre's and
converters. I'm still working with the oldest of the old - DA88 (and
DA38) converters and am pretty happy with the way they sound. My DA88
was one of the first made (with recently updated firmware)- made about
13 years ago. I'm using my Soundcraft Ghost board for mic pre's (and a
Sound Devices 302 portable mixer). I know that the digital world has
gotten better and better. And I know there are much better mic pre's
out there. I'm not sure how much I care. I really do need a faster
computer though.

It would probably make my life a lot easier to stick with MOTU, and
the Ultralite seems a perfect little (and cheap) package. If I stick
with MOTU I can upgrade gradually (keeping the DA88's for the time
being, and eventually using them for extra channels).

It's hard to read R.A.P and not salivate over the Class A pre's in the
RME products and the so highly praised converters.
