Do you realize how foolish this statement makes you look?
Perhaps it needs disputation.
I want to say something _extremely_ rude, but will resist.
This is why I'm having less and less interest in debating you. A bunch of
words that insult, but add nothing of substance to the conversation.
As opposed to your unsubstantiated claims?
Here is a pertinent excerpt from J. Gordon Holt's review. He began his
tests by connecting the SS-1's woofer to the system already set up in his
room -- KLH Model Nines. The results were not altogether pleasing.
Not pleasing to who[m]?
To the man who was unintentionally responsible for starting the magazine
that publicly provoked the argument we are now engaged in.
Using what criteria?
The criteria of live sound. J. Gordon Holt has decades of live recording
under his belt.
I'm not saying these speakers sounded good.
The speakers sounded fine -- they were KLH Model Nines. It was the
combination of the speaker and the crossover that didn't sound so good.
But one person's opinion while listening in what I assume is
an untreated room is not much of a data point.
A frequency response check showed the crossover's high-end response
to be extremely flat.
Yeah, I'm sure he knows everything about measuring speakers in a listening
room and is an expert at interpreting the results.
First, he was talking about the crossover -- not the speaker-cum-crossover.
(Read it, Ethan.)
I've testedand
this stuff many times to my satisfaction, combining harmonically related
unrelated tones at multiple levels. Even if by some miracle a combinationof
frequencies could be found where one 80 dB below the other can just barely
be perceived, nobody would claim a "dramatic difference."
Tones are not musical sounds. Your tests are strong evidence in support of
your view, but not proof.
Again, you're also willfully misreading what I posted. (I don't understand
why everything has to be spelled out in excruciating detail.) The point of
Gordon's testing was that a device using an IC op-amp had measured
steady-state distortion that would be inaudible in tube equipment. Clearly,
the measurements _were_ invalid. That's the point he was trying to make.
Look, I'm inlcined to believe that -80dB is the point (or near the point)
where distortion components become inaudible. But I've yet to see _proof_ of
it. You assume too much.
Yet I would almost (almost!) bet my life that you could find different op
amps with comparable levels of measured distortion that don't sound so
good.
Next time you're in my neighborhood (western Connecticut) please stop byyou'll
and we'll test this stuff together in my home studio. I'm quite sure
leave with a different opinion than you have now.
How about testing some ca-1970 IC op-amp buffers?
I've repeatedly stated -- and in at least one of my postings to you --
that I disagree with "those people" as much as I do with you.
So you're an equal opportunity instigator? :->)
Absolutely. Intellectual foolishness is intellectual foolishness, regardless
of the source.
possibleOne side of an issue has to be right, the other wrong -- it's not
for _both_ sides to be wrong
Not only is it possible for both sides to be wrong, it's very common! For
example, who is "right" about which god is the true god - Catholics or
Buddhists?
I don't believe Buddhists worship a god. Regardless, you'd better not let
Arny hear that remark.
