I was surprised how loud that is. I can't imagine to listen to musicpart of what headroom is for is the difference between RMS and peak...
peaking at -0.1 dB FS for a long time at this level for mixing. Am I
doing something wrong here? Maybe I need to incorporate headroom into
this equation, so my music does not come anywhere near 0 dB FS during
mixing or mastering?
With good quality audio, the peaks can be 10 to 20 dB above the RMS
value.
And interestingly, true random Gaussian white noise has infinte peaks
but you have to wait a very long time for them to occur. In practice
peaks of noise are "considered to be" 12 to 15 dB above the RMS
value. You need an oscilloscope or peak responding meter to see them.
