Hello all,
I have a festival producer wanting to be able to specify in contracts
with bands an agreed upon maximum sound level. Imagine a biggish (1000
seat) hall, essentially a rock band (blues, southern rock, or
otherwise), a sound guy that travels with the band, and an audience
that tends toward the not really young, typically 30s to 50s, enough of
whom will get upset when they start to feel overwhelmed by volume that
they find uncomfortable.
What would you suggest as a maximum dB level? It can be tricky to
accomodate both an act that is used to playing loud and an audience
that tends not to like it that way. And what's a good way to measure
it? All I have is a Radio Shack sound level meter.
thanks,
Albert
If much of the level is from bass frequencies, kick and bass dominating, as
is common in rock, and if it's well-mixed, then I'd say about 95, maybe 100
dB is typical. Peaks maybe to 105, but the majority of the time about 95 is
the goal. Of course, there's no way to know what the audience will think,
and there will always be 'turn it up/down' requests. Grab that SPL meter and
walk the room at sound check.
