The second year with a different show I used a Roland VG8 system and
programmed all the levels and fuzzes into it.
The sound guy still had to do some work on the fly even when mixing with
the programmed levels, but it was easier than if we both were constantly
changing.
I'll second the direct virtual amp testimonial. I'm in a band that seems to be a lot like yours except that we use some MIDI backing tracks instead of live string/horn/key players. Our lead vocalist/guitarist uses a virtual amp thing, I'm not sure what model, and he has all his levels and tone change controls programmed into the backing tracks. This is probably more important to us than to you because we don't have a sound man for the FOH mix - we need to be able to mostly set it and forget it. I play guitar in other situations and I've found that when I use in-ear monitors an amp on stage is pretty much a waste anyway, so maybe there's another tip for you.
