Or maybe there already is one.

I'm getting tired of writing "24-bit audio at 96 kHz sample rate" and
such. We all know what "24/96" means in this contenxt, but I'd like to
put something else together with it.

"24/96 Bitskilohertz" doesn't quite make it. Is there already a word
for what I want? If not, let's create one.

When I've written 3,000 words and the editor wants 2500, every little
word reduction counts.

Mike,

Given all the delivery formats for our IVR we've been standardizing
on the following labeling:

SampleRate-BitDepth_Codec:bitrate

eg:

44-16_PCM
16-16_uLaw
44-16_mp3:128k
96-24_PCM

you get the idea.

Well, we've had divided by, which was wrong, and now we have minus,
which is probably even worse.

Come on chaps THEY MULTIPLY.

d

That would perhaps make more sense (e.g. 24x44.1), but the "/" notation
has been used "de facto" to the point it is quite familiar. By the way,
the hyphen and the slash have meanings other than as mathematical
symbols.

-Jay

Not when you are putting them in numbers, they don't.

d

They do in the context of the subject of the writing. In a mathematical
treatise, they have mathematical meaning. In a popular press piece
about audio the symbols would not automatically be assumed to be
mathematical symbols unless they appear in an equation.
