First of all, I can't see a reason to purchase Shure microphones at a
total cost of the entire PA system ($99 apiece), when I can probably
get just as good a sound from a $20 Behringer XM8500.
Secondly, I probably need about 100 watts or so. Playing in a garage
or abandoned portion of our shop won't require a lot of power. These
units, speakers and all, can be had for around $200 - $400.
I want a powered amp and regular speakers. The amp should accept XLR
and 1/4" inputs so I can mic voice and maybe even plug in a guitar if I
wanted to. I could take the POD output and plug the line-out directly
into the 1/4" input if I didn't want to use a regular amp and mic the
amp.
My local shop has a Stageworks 100W 4-channel PA system for $199 used
in great condition, speakers and all. They also have a Crate system,
same exact specs, same price. I've seen Stageworks before in Sam Ash.
Not sure what it is? Sam Ash had another Stageworks PA system for $340
that had 8 inputs and actually combined the speakers and mixer together
into some kind of locking fashion with wheels to let you roll the thing
around like a suitcase. Neat-o.
A couple of low-z XLR cables and mic stands and I'm all set, right?
Does anyone think any of this is foolish of me to get my feet wet and
possibly even take me into a small gig? We're not talking anything
more than a few people in my backyard, but I'd hate to have to buy an
entirely new PA system for that. I see 100W and some are 200W, isn't
that a lot of power? I mean, really? Or, will the vocals get distored
and terrible at a loud level?

More power = cleaner sound. Not familiar with Stageworks, so I can't
offer a suggestion. I've used the Behringer SM58 knock-off's - they
sound better than they should, so I think you're fine with them. Try
to get a stereo mixer/head of some kind... that way you can use one
side for monitors, one side for mains once you start playing "gigs" in
your back yard. I actually picked up 6 of the Nady SP5 from Musician's
Friend for $40, just to have some junk microphones around for headphone
rehearsals and such. Buy one, get two free from Musician's Friend.
