Quicktime is evil, at least on PCs. I try to avoid it and only let it
run for friends.
Why is it evil?
It tries to take over and play everything that it thinks it can, and
not always very well. Also, unless you know to look for it, the
installation file for Quicktime also installs iTunes, and that takes
over things as well. Several months back I found the need to update my
Quicktime (I think it was Version 4) and went to the Apple web site,
innocently downloaded the latest version and trusted the installation.
I spent a few days cleaning up that mess. It wasn't even nice enough to
ask what parts I wanted to install, it just took off and caused mayhem.
Eventually I found the "just plain Quicktime player" version buried
deep in the web site, installed that, and so far it hasn't given me any
trouble.
But the unsuspecting user who does more audio with his computer than
just play downloaded or streaming files can make trouble for himself by
installing it without knowing exactly what to install and what not to
install.
