Using "SoundMax Digital Integrated Driver" and there's no obvious option
to change the output clock - it seems to always be 48kHz.
Sounds about right. 48 KHz is the de facto PC multimedia standard, even
though that standard actually allows more flexibility. In this case
flexibility costs money, and onboard sound is a minimum-cost subsystem.
I learned something interesting in this regard last week. I was
working with a new AudioVault broadcast network and the Digigram audio
cards all require external sync, so I bough a nice Lucid master clock
and hosed them all up. Since we are playing back 44.1 audio, I
thought I should also clock the cards at 44.1. Doing so produced
grungy recordings and playback however. The mixers all are 48 kHz. I
re-clocked the sound cards to 48 and even though I'm playing back 44.1
audio, and they all sound good now.
What I would have preferred to do was to make 48 the house standard
record play rate given the 48 kHz consoles, but there is a reason I
won't go into (unless asked) why that was not a practical solution.
