The difference between the KM84 and KM184 isn't a presence peak.. the

the same. The difference is due to the electronics. As long as you don't
replace the KM84 electronics with KM184 electronics, it'll still keep
sounding like a KM84.
Scott, pardon me but the above is not quite correct. As you say, the K
84 capsule per se is the same as ever, internally. But the rear sound
inlet in the KM 184's capsule head is much narrower than the inlet of
the KM 84, and this leads to a 1 or 2 dB peak around 9 - 10 kHz for
purely acoustical reasons. The amplifiers of both the KM 84 and KM 184
have very flat frequency response; this can be shown by bypassing the
capsule with a measurement test head.
That makes sense, and is quite believable. But I can't believe that the
electronics don't make at least as significant a contribution, primarily
because of the transformer in the KM184. I stand corrected on the response
point.
Neumann claims that the additional peak in the KM 140 / KM 184 was
requested by many of their customers. I'd like to meet one of those
customers some day--I don't know of anyone who has ever used a KM 84
and still prefers the new models.
I still think the KM140 and KM184 sound different but I don't have any
idea why they should.
The rest of what you said, I agree with 100%. We posted our replies at
around the same time, and you managed to say it all in fewer words than
I did.
Thank you.
