Thanks for keeping your eyes open, Laurence!

Still don't have an answer to your question though...
I bet you can find better. I don't use these things. I suspect many
have limiting or some such to make the tiny amps in them sound louder.
As the original question said,
Sounds like it needs a big
electrolytic across whatever rail is driving the final op-amp, which of
course would never fit in the package.
Sufficient filtering and coupling capacitance doesn't fit in the
budget, either.
Most now use class D digital amps to save battery power, and some I've
scoped don't bother filtering the nasty PWM result, figuring the
earphones will do that job for free. I don't recall the original
question saying what the output of the player was fed to, but if it
isn't earphones, the massive dose of PWM could be overwhelming it.
As for "MP3", it comes from several different-sounding encoders in
several different formats, and a wide array of quality levels. Like a
JPEG image, an MP3 can be nice or awful, depending on the creative
choices and intention of its creator. Insisting that MP3 is not
tolerable to "audiophiles" is as silly as saying the same about
uncompressed WAV format on the basis that some WAV files are only
8-bits and 8 KHz.
Come to think of it, the original question didn't say whether the WAV
files on the Flash player were 16/44 or not...
"Audiophiles" who refuse to participate in the lossy compression world
will find very little to listen to in a few years. "The masses" are
setting standards for the future right now, and people who care about
quality need to be involved.
