Hi Pros,

looking for good recording stuff, I came across a SONY PCM-3348 system at
a 'reasonable' price.

Whoops, I didn't notice the HR suffix. The HR is a machine more akin to the
PCM3324S electronically but shares the same transport design as the original
3348. It does not suffer from the head hours meter, simce its been built
into the software. Quite frankly, they're not built quite as "tank-like" as
the original 3348. The drawbacks for this machine are that the only way to
install and align the heads is to use propriatary Sony software which is
issued only to Sony service guys. These machines were available with or
without ADA convertors. Many people used them for their digital consoles
with no ADA conversion. The machines were capable of doing 24 bit
recording but the converters were only 20 bit. They were pretty damn good
sounding though. Typical analog dynamic range was about 106-108db. The
biggest drawback is still maintenance, since only the Sony guy can come out
and align it with their software. I'll admit the software made things much
easier to deal with and many alignments were typically "automatic". You
need a laptop, the software and a special serial interface card to talk to
the machine though. The transport and tension alignments can be done from
the deck though and are pretty much automatic as well, except you need a
tentelometer.

The power supply issue remains the same. All that's listed in the manual
for the power supply is a part number and the cost is about $10k. Many of
these machines suffered from power supply problems. We were never issued
schematics, but there is a service bulletin out there that describes
changing the value of several caps in the switching supply which will get it
up and running again. I just feel naked without having any documentation on
something as basic as a power supply (and its not a simple supply).
Changing the caps is about a 4-5 hour job providing you've done it before.

Also be advised that Sony has lost their manufacturer for the thin film
record heads used on all 3348's and early 3348HR's. They went to a
different manufacturer who developed a staggered head design (not unlike a
Wolke MCI erase head). This required a rather messy modification to correct
the timing between the tracks. If you can view the machine personally, and
check the center head, on a thin film head, you can't see any tracks, but on
the new "bulk" staggered heads you can. There should be a decal on the 2 of
the SP boards stating they were modified for bulk heads. If this is the
case, this may not be a bad purchase. These machines sold new in '98 for
$250K. The fact that you can get it so cheaply, may be an indication that
it has the older style heads, but its worth checking out.. The head
configuration also changed for this machine. The original 3348 used 2
record heads and one playback head. The HR uses 2 playback heads and one
record head.
