I'm another who uses the Epson R300. I find it a bit of a pain, since
after printing a few hundred, it will no longer pull in the CD tray
(the rollers just slip on it), so you have to be ready to nudge it
after hearing a particular sound or you get an error , which it takes
the printer a while to recover from. Also, if you tell it to print a CD
too soon after turning it on, it goes through some kind of bizarre
ritual where it spits the tray out the back, then runs motors in
various directions for a minute or two before giving an error.

If I had to do this over, I'd try those new "LightScribe" CD drives
that use the same laser that writes the CD to etch a label on the other
side of the CD. (You have to take the CD out and put it in upside down
to do this, and you need special CD-Rs, although those are available at
about $1 each.) You don't get the option of color, but I think that's
made up for by avoiding problems with actually mounting and aligning
the CD in the printer (which is the irritating factor with the Epson),
and no ink expenses at all.

Friends who have tried the 'Lightscribe' discs speak of their own set of
problems and inconveniences, particularly sloooow writing. I cannot justify
a purpose designed disc printing system, so at this time I have found no
affordable solution better than the klunky inkjet printer hybrids with all
their foibles. I use an Epson 220, which does very acceptable print-on
labels. Its spasms of whirring and spitting and lights flashing doesn't
happen very often, so I put up with it as a better alternative than a Pentel
marker.
