The actual physical drive in your computer is probably not one

That makes a certain amount of sense, though I figured that any decent
program would just use whatever hardware Windows throws at it via the
driver. I suppose that when they wake up Monday at Nero and get my tech
support query, they'll tell me that I can update to Version 7 for only
$79.95 or something.
Most likely. You save like $10 if you have a valid number from a
previous version. For something as full featured as Nero it's not that
bad. You should do what Julian suggested and try the demo first though
to see if it fixes the problem. And that freeware program that Richard
suggested...I don't know what exactly you need to do with the program,
but perhaps the freebie will do everything you need.
Also...I hate to tell you this, but that same money buys you that same
computer from Dell, but with a Dual core chip and a bigger
display...maybe you can still take it back.
I've been looking at a lot of notebook computers lately. Much as I'm
sort of happy with my present Dells, I've sort of written them off
since they changed their policy and now charge a restocking fee if you
want to return it. I also didn't really see anything in a Dell that was
quite like this for the price. One of my criteria is that it needs to
be a couple of pounds lighter than what I'm packing around now - this
isn't just for the occasional recording project - and that would get me
up into the $1400 range in Dell.
I was pretty close to orderig a Lenovo R52, but since I saw this, and
Office Depot allows returns with no fee within 14 days, I thought it
was worth giving it a try. I suspect that if your reasoning is correct,
this version of Nero wouldn't work on a new Dell either, though maybe
it comes with a current version of Nero or something more reasonable.
But then I bought this version of Nero because my last Dell laptop came
with Easy CD Creator which didn't allow me to split up a long track so
it could be indexed.
I wasn't suggesting the Dell as a means to get rid of your Nero
issue...it's just a better price/performance ratio. Mine cost $1K
exactly and it has a 1.66GHz dual-core chip, 15" WSXGA+ 1680x1050
display, 1GB RAM, DVD burner, 80GB HD and built in a/g wi-fi. Sony
likes to charge more because they think they are a "name" in the
computer industry. They aren't. Lenovo (IBM) are great notebooks, but
definitely at a premium.
I haven't used any other CD/DVD burning software since I discovered
Nero...so I couldn't advise you any other way.
I could do that in Sequoia but that's an old version, too (and it costs
LOTS more to upgrade than Nero) but I'm not sure if I can run Sequoia
on this computer. It requires a parallel port for its dongle (never
versions use a USB dongle) and this computer (like most) doesn't have a
parallel port, not even on the optional port replicator. That was one
advantage of the Lenovo - a real parallel port. When I get closer to
deciding that I can stand this Sony, I'll pick up a USB-Parallel
adapter and see if the Sequoia dongle will work with that.
I'm sure it does being the most expensive audio software on the
market...do you need everything that program does?
What's the networking issue?
I described it in another message in this tread - briefly, not all the
computers on the network in the same workgroup can see each other, and
those that can can't move files in both directions.
I'll look for it and shoot you an email.
Peace,
