It's free. It will allow you to run your AC97 or other on-board audio
at low latencies with great stability.

Well, it gives you the chance to use the ASIO driver mode, but it still
won´t make an onboard AC97 sound card any better soundwise. These
onboard things are put together from the cheapest parts available to
give the customer the possibility of having sound output without having
to install a PCI card for sound output. It basically works, but not
more.
That´s the point. Those onboard sound cards may have improved in quality
over the last years, but they´re still not designed for tasks like DAW
applications... ;-)
