p.s. rapid power on/off can do many odd things. It'll be to do with initial
conditions being essentially undetermined compared to a 'clean' power-up.

Yes, the "evil" thing was a joke.

You might be on target with the clean power up. At least that makes
sense. I believe the VCAs are basicly computer controled, and a
non-normal power up could fool that proccess.
