I'm leaning towards one of the new macs, probably the 'Macbook' with the
Intel processor. I don't specifically need Windows, though.

I'm not militantly anti-Mac but I'd really not like to avoid changing
horses after working with PCs all these years. All of my other
computeres are PCs running some version of Windows (I have one Win98,
one Win2000, and one WinXP) and learning a new vocabulary and new
application software is more than I want to do at my age and level of
interest. So I'll stick with PCs.

I'm a little leary of changing, I'm pretty sure I can figure out Word for
Mac and whatever internet software it has (which is all I need for basics),
but any recording I do with it has to be a whole new endeavor, with new
software and most likely new hardware.

I loved Compaq when they made the first transportable computer, in fact
I had one that ran a BBS for many years (someone else's surplus). But
I've always had a kind of distrust for their laptops. I think this
comes from what they used to do (and maybe still do) of putting a
partition on the disk with the Windiows installation data, and not
providing real Windows media.

I believe they do the 'recovery cd' thing now. They've done some cheezy
things though. There were a bunch of Armada models that had all the BIOS
settings saved on a hard drive partition - not backed up, that's where the
BIOS settings were stored!

Money, other than the principle of not wanting to spend it, isn't a big
problem. That's why I'm thinking of buying a "travel" computer first
and learning what this generation of laptops are like. Anything I buy
is going to run Word, Excel, a mail program, Firefox, and at least a
basic auido program. If I find that I can acutally use it for
recording, that would be a nice bonus, and if it's a pain, at least
I'll know more about what can go wroing should I decide to get another
computer for recording.

Well, how much recording? I've been thinking that maybe all I really need to
do with a laptop is 2 channels at a time, mixing just a few channels for
scratch mixes. So basically I need a USB port. A DVD burner would be nice.
This opens it up quite a bit for me, and I can probably get a 'superlight'
computer that I can effortlessly walk around with.

Another thing you might want to look for is a Panasonic. They have a line of
semi-ruggedized ultralights that might or might not be 'the best of both
worlds'. I don't know, you might be able to buy two laptops for the price.
