Re: Is this a good way to test pre-amp hiss of a digital recorder?

For the most part, everybody does use the same procedure -- replace the
source with a resistor -- and pretty much the same resistor -- either 150 or
200 ohms. The AES probably has a standards document someplace on how to do
this, but meanwhile get a 150 ohm resistor and you can separate the sheep
from the goats in the preamp world quite effectively.

I had this discussion with David Josephson a few years back, and
afterwards, replaced the 150 ohm resistors in my "dummy mic" with a
piece of wire. I don't recall what his reasoning was, but it made sense
at the time. And David knows microphones and what they connect to.

David is (or at least has been) chairman of the AES committe on
microphone standards, and they can never get anything done. But if they
ever do publish a standard on measurement of mic preamp noise, it might
very well be with a shorted input rather than a resistor.

'scuse me while I look up the ("It is almost INVARIABLY specified" - P.
Allison Jun 5) EIN for the mic input of an iRiver recorder. Maybe Phil
can help me out here if I can't find it on the web site.
