Re: Networking 2 DAWs

I have an RME Multiface with Cardbus cable - I'm now finally upgrading my
desktop computer but buying the new PCI card & cable for the Multiface is a
bit of a stretch at the moment (it's more expensive than I'd expected!)
so... if I network the laptop (2.4GHz P4-M 768MB XP Home) & the desktop
(3.2GHz dual core Intel 2GB XP Pro) via ethernet, can I use the RME cardbus
on the laptop as an interface to the newer computer with its extra
processing power & memory - or will the laptop's processor still govern the
performance? I think the laptop has 10/100 ethernet and the desktop has
gigabit. Clearly I don't know enough about networking!!

Not clear which you are asking about...
A) Record via the RME/laptop, through the network and
indirectly to the desktop hard drive.
B) Record to the laptop drive and then transfer the tracks
to the desktop for editing, etc.

"B" seems quite practical. "A" has several potential "gotchas".
Some of the "gotchas" depend on what you mean by "networking".

If you mean a single "crossover" UTP cable between the laptop
and the desktop PC, then you might get away with it. If by
"networking" you mean these two computers plugged into a
network with a hub/switch (or two) and several other computers,
printers, etc. connected, I wouldn't bet on it. In any case it is
much more of a sure bet to record directly to the laptop hard
drive and then copy the files over to the desktop workstation, etc.
