HELP! I am a novice, but I have t Tascam 34 open reel deck. When IHi Frank
play a tape it slows and stops. Everything is clean. The brake bands
do not bind. When it is idle the flywheel spins very slowly, but when
I press play is stops. I can't tell if the drive belt is not grabbing
or if the motor is stopping. I haven't disassembled it enough yet. I
don't know of any qualified technicians in my area (Port Jefferson,
NY), so it would appear that I am it. I'm not experienced in this
stuff but I'm handy and follow instructions well. Any ideas?
Thank you, Frank
The 34 is same as the 32 just 4 track. I have repaired 3 32's in the last 6 months. Sounds like your capstan belt is slipping. You need to remove the cover to check it out. That would be all the screws you see around the edge of the face. Remove the 2 screws holding the tape counter/cover and finally the pitch control has a locking nut you need to remove. Remove all knobs. Pitch control and volume control require a tiny metric allen wrench for the inner hex nut. Capstan roller, tension arm covers unscrew and rollers come right off. All screws are metric. Made in Japan.
You can get a new belt from Tascam.
I can fax over to you a few of the repair pages.
Good Luck
