I think this actually is the way lots of mixers work, but it is pretty
standard protocol to always leave the main output at unity gain. The
reasoning there would be that you are monitoring what the mix buss is
outputting, and your headphone volume is just a trim to whatever source
you have selected.
With no solo feature, it looks like you are just going to have to
listen to the output level...
The only other option i can see would be putting in some kind of gain
control after the output and before your speakers.
