Re: Sorry, I sneezed. New AT2021 and Rode Omni acoustic guitar clips up

We're talkin' about waves? Cool! OK, let a surfer 'splain it to you,
Lucy.

Sound waves are air...

Actually that's inaccurate, Glenn. An ocean wave can travel for
thousands of miles before breaking on the beach. But the water hasn't
traveled those many miles, only the energy of the wave. If I'm sitting
on my surfboard out beyond the break, out in the "Sharkbait" position,
each swell will sweep me a few feet towards shore as it passes under
me, and then I'll get pulled back out to sea, the same amount, by the
next approaching swell, but overall staying in the same general area,
like rocking back and forth on a rocking chair.
Similarly, the molecules of water, or air, don't actually travel
with the waves that pass through them, though they do "rock" back and
forth, maybe less than half a wave length? What happens when we
close-mic a vocal is that the only frequencies that are long enough to
reach the mic's diaphragm are the bass frequencies, which is why we get
pops on "P"s. Also, more importantly, in forming the "P" sound with
our mouths, we blow air out creating "wind", which is a whole different
thing than "sound". "Wind" is more like the whitewater of a broken
wave. And yeah, those molecules are moving, and can smack you!
Anyways, I'm done blowing hot air for the moment. I agree with
your macro thesis Glenn; move the mic around until you like what you
hear. But I'm not entirely sold on your theory.
Aloha, Rick.
