I currently work for one station that is very much concerned about
loosing their already tiny share of CPB money and another that doesn't
get any CPB money and doesn't care because they pull in $450,000 each
pledge drive. Both stations are getting the new NPR equipment and
I'll be installing it at both stations with a new computer networked
on air automation system at both places too. The rich place is
replacing their AudioVault with a newer AudioVault system and I'll be
networking it to a satellite receiver miles away. The poor place is
accepting NPR's generous ENCO system and adding some upgrades that I
recommended.
Both of those situations sound familiar. On the far end of the scale,
though, we have a local noncomm station that just got their first
automation rig ever. It's an old Arrakis they bought used and they
are just so delighted at not having to get kids to work the night shift
or shut down. For years the GM swore she'd never allow automation of
any sort, but they are dependant on student volunteers so labour is always
tight.
