And that's exactlly the problem - you have to go thoroughly out of your
way to find 74-minute (650 MB, I guess) blanks any more. I'd like to
find some slower speed ones, too, but I don't want to depend on them
uniless I can depend on getting them when I need them. I'm not ready to
make a lifetime buy if I find them now.
I moved my old Magnavox CD player into the Pile of Stuff that Still
Works but I Don't Need Any More (next to the Pile of Stuff that Doesn't
Word but is Too Expensive to Throw Away) when I got a VCR/DVD player
for the living room. I've noticed that somewhere between 10 and 20
percent of the CDs that I record on my TASCAM CDRW-5000 have problems
in that player, as do occasional computer home-made CDs both that I
make and that I get from other people. And I'm using Taiyo Yuden blanks
(though 80 minute 52x speed) because I've found that the TASCAM
recorder doesn't complain about them.
I think that both the writing and reading is getting worse. It doesn't
have anything to do with SCMS, but it might be a plot by the industry
to, if not eliminate copying, make it less "perfect" than we expect.
