Folks,
Over the past few years I've noticed that CDRs played in my car start to
break up after 20 minutes or so of playing. It starts with a small amount of
"popcorn" type background noise, then gets worse, then eventually it sounds
just terrible AND the CD skips and stutters at the slightest bump in the
road implying a laser / tracking problem. I always assumed it was my car's
aging CD player, and maybe the fact that CDs get very warm after they've
been inside there for a while.
I've noticed a big increase in reliability if you burn at a slower
speeds when making audio discs. I have a 52X CD burner. I'll use 52X
when making a data disc, but never go above 24X when burning an audio
disc. I might even go 16X or 8X when making an audio disc for a
client. I use TDK 80 minute 52X blanks and they work every time. I
purposely keep a couple of older CD players around that were built
before CD-R's were available. They will choke on anything that's not
quite up to par. I'll test my burns on those and if they play there,
I know they will play anywhere. I can't remember the last bad CD I
burned.
