You'd be surprised how many people who beg poor mouth, after hearing the CMC641, actually find the money to buy one. They have actually emailed me to thank me for helping them make that tough decision. I think of our presence here as one that help raise the bar instead of lower it. Otherwise we'd be recording everything with dixie cups, pieces of string and rusty packaging tape.
You know, for that "classic" primitive sound, you might be on to something here.
Specifically, since the poster mentioned experience with a higher grade of mic, I was trying to connect with him on that level, to prevent him the anguish of choosing less and having to settle for it. It's your right to interlope. If that upsets you, I'm sorry, but at the same time, for the above reason, I don't care.
Yes, and lest we forget, the newsgroup here is called "rec.audio.PRO", as in professional, as in we do this for a living. So I echo Ty here on this. We are professionals, well, some of us at least, and when people come asking for advice from PROFESSIONALS, do not expect we will suggest crap as a solution...
"Oh, yes, you want that amazing Radio Shack microphone. Never mind the plastic grip... it's really cool!" is not going to be heard passing over our lips.
You want a decent cheap mic for guitar? Fine. Buy the AT combo with the AT2020 and AT 2021. $199 for both. This is simply a deal that you can't beat, and a scarily wise move for AT. With these two mics at this price point they have shut the fucking door on Oktava and the entire litter of lesser sino-made mics, period.
And, to be sure, Audio Technica is one of the few companies that applies quality on down to their "budget" line that equals their pro line. I like to refer to them as a poor man's Neumann, not that they sound like a Neumann or a Gefell, but because the quality level is consistent and reliable and the sound they produce works well for many things.
So, please, folks, if you're coming here for counsel and advice, we are going to give you answers that are what you need, not what you want. We are going to make suggestions that are based on our years of professional level experience working with quality equipment.
We know what you are trying to accomplish. We want to help you get that "sound", but it just can't be done with equipment that was never designed to produce such sounds in the first place. And, yes, we understand many of you suffer budget constraints -- who doesn't -- but with a little research and patience to wait an extra month or two, you can save up the money to purchase equipment you will love and that will give you many, many years of service without breaking.
