<<I'm designing a new double pane iso window for a studio. I have
always
used angled panes of 3/4" insulated glass. As I understand it, this
defeats the low end transmission through the windows.>>
No, it's really the distance between panes that cuts down on low
frequency transmission. Angling the panes does have some benefits, but
increased STL values in the low end are infintessimally small with
angled glass.
<<But I was just perusing the Auralex website and saw on their "window
construction" page that they recommend keeping "the panes parallel to
each other to maximize the dead air space between them." >>
Sort of, but with a sufficiently thick wall, you can get plenty of dead
air space even with the distance between panes narrower at the bottom.
<<The drawing
page displays paraallel windows as "the best method" and angled windows
as just "an acceptable method." The note on the angled window drawing
states:" The loss of sound isolation resulting from angling windows is
typically greater than the relative improvement in reflection control.
As such angling windows is generally discouraged for studio windows."
I think they're supposing a scenario that doesn't necessarily have to
apply. If you have an 8" thick wall & place the panes parallel at the
farthest edges of the available space, yes, you will have greater dead
air space than if you place the bottoms of the panes 4" apart & the
tops 8" apart to get an angle. In this case Auralex's info is correct.
However if you build a much thicker wall, such as the 2 or 3 feet
typical in many control room walls, it becomes moot, & the benefits of
angled glass come into play, specifically, reflections are aimed away
from opposing wall surfaces, & under certain lighting conditions you
can actually see through the glass instead of just seeing yourself
reflected.
