Not a question. I'm just passing along what I've discovered recently. The
Event ASP8 is an active monitor with 8" woofer and dome tweeter. I use a
pair as nearfields to mix with.
Instrumental ensemble or baroque orchestra with harp or harpsichord not
loud enough to balance the group. I use a spot mic into my recorder and a
monitor signal out to the line level XLR input of the ASP8 sitting just in
front of the instrument (or under it, in the case of one harpsichord). I
can amplify it just enough to balance the rest of the group without any
obvious SR artifacts--it doesn't "sound like a speaker is playing".
In today's concert, the harpsichord was playing in a trio with violin and
flute (2nd movement of Brandenburg #5) and needed help. At that point in
the concert the director asked me to turn on the speaker. I smiled and
told him it had been on the whole concert (about 45 minutes). Worked well.
Didn't even mess up the recording (as speakers are wont to do).
I've done this three times now with three different groups and achieved the
same results.
1) With a good microphone well placed, the ASP8 has a neutral sound with a
"soft" high end that makes it disappear into the texture of the music.
2) The bass and treble controls on the speaker are sometimes useful, as
well as the low cut (80 Hz).
3) It is directional enough in a large room that I can place it just a foot
or two out front of the microphone without feedback.
4) I wouldn't totally replace an acoustic instrument with the sound of this
speaker, but it works well reinforcing the real thing.
5) It's also small enough and good looking enough to sit on stage and not
be obtrusive. I stick a small bit of tape over the green LED.
If this continues I'll have to build or buy a case to carry it in, because
that elegant black finish won't stand much traveling.
I've had mine for a about a year now and these monitors never cease to
amaze me.
I do mostly acoustic type work as well, recording my Steinway B and also
using sampled instruments from Garritans Big Band library. In addition I
record small groups, mostly jazz trios using either samples or a
combination of live and sampled instruments. I have been doing some small
restoration jobs as well.
By acoustic I mean no hip hop, rap etc..
Real instrument sounds, even if they are sampled.
Anyhow, the Events have never let me down. I sold a pair of Dynaudio BM6a's
and the truth is I have never looked back.
To be honest, when I first got them they seemed to sound too good and I was
a little worried because I had been down that road before.
However after careful placement according to guidelines on Ethans site,
guidelines? ***, he has an entire encyclopedia on that site!!!! they
dialed in just wonderful.
Thanks Ethan!!
A crappy recording (Carol Kings Tapestry, great music, horrid recording)
will sound awful and a great recording (Jazz from the Pawn Shop) will sound
stunning with a large amount of depth and air to the sound without over
doing the high or low end like Hr824s tend to do IMHO.
However, if you like NS-10's or KrKs you will hate these monitors.
I use my KrK K-roks as psudeo Ns-10's to check my mixes.
Also, if you have listened to previous Event models, like the 20/20, these
sound nothing like those.
I never liked that monitor at all.
For $1200 or so these puppies are real sleepers in my opinion and sound
like they should cost a whole lot more.
