If the HDD is failing (the clicks) then the best utility is from Gibson
Research, Spinrite 6 and it is $89. If Spinrite cannot recover the disk
then it is unlikely to be recovered, you will not know until you try. If it
can recover the disk then you would want to make an image onto a new HDD and
move over to that one. I have had Spinrite to recover several computers and
failed on one (the HDD was too far gone). However, $89 for Spinrite and $70
for a new HDD is a good down payment on a new computer these days.

I'm going to suggest something more extreme, but it's doable.
I was trying to avoid that.
The hard part isn't installing the operating system -- its installing all
the apps and utilities.
That's just what I was trying to avoid. If I have to do that, I might
as well buy a new computer. This one is a Pentium 3.
Remember, you have the
previous boot drive as a guide as to what to install.
Not if I can't boot it I don't. And I don't have a full image backup. I
do have backups of recent working stuff, but there's all the
applications, passwords, Windows bookmarks. And it's beginning to sound
(from the clicks) like the original drive is failing.
Maybe it's just a bad drive cable. Wouldn't that be nice? But I'm about
to give it a rest for the night and see if a serious expert shows up.
Huge hard drives are dirt cheap. I bought an 80GB Seagate with a 5-year
warranty for $60.
