Is there a way to record a singing guitar duo (which plays standing)

It would be preferable to keep the vocal and the guitar tracks apart
for separate post processing, but to what extent can this be achieved
in a normal (not studio) room environment?
Sure. Use figure-8 mikes. Guitar in the null of the vocal mike, vocal
in the null of the guitar mike. Work for best separation on the guitar
mike if you have a choice, because vocal leakage into the guitar mike
will screw the vocals up and cause more problems than guitar leakage into
the vocal mike.
That awful sound from leakage is mainly comb filtering due to the acoustic
delay from one mic to the next v. the "instant" and simultaneous arrival
of the electrical signals from the mics.
Scott's idea will certainly help, but you can augment this (or deal with
the problem "as is" if you don't have figure-8s) by time-adjusting the
vocal mic slightly -- on the order of 0.7-1.1 mS assuming the geometry of
your performer/mic combo is fairly typical, and assuming that the problem
is vocal bleed into the guitar mic. (In my experience it is indeed the
vocal into the guitar that causes the most problems, so that's where you'd
most often start.)
Generally, in the mix, you'll delay the vocal so that its signal is in
acoustic phase with the vocal leakage component in the guitar (electical
arrival delayed to match acoustic arrival time).
You'd be amazed what you can fix with such delays, once you get the time
delay dialed in just exactly right and know where to start. And such
delays are usually easy to do with DAWs or digital recorders.
