I work at a college that has a fairly small gymnasium that is used for
sporting events, practices, public speakers, and many other types of
events. We're designing a new audio system, and need speakers that will
hang from the ceiling and can take a beating from high-speed baseballs.
As a point of reference, the grilles on the lights often get knocked
off by baseballs and other types of flying objects. The emergency
light, though covered with a metal grille, has been replaced 3 times in
a few years from being hit.
I know many manufacturers make protective grilles for the front of the
speaker, but I need to protect the entire enclosure from damage. Does
anyone have experience with this, or know of a speaker manufacturer who
makes something for this purpose? Right now we're looking at SoundTube
speakers (www.soundtube.com), but we're not sure if there's something
more durable.
I've used Electro-Voice Sx100 speakers for years, and I think they're tough
enough to withstand flying baseballs. The most vulnerable thing would
probably be the place where the cable plugs in; get the 1/4" version rather
than the SpeakOn version, and use good-quality right-angle plugs, which
won't protrude from the slot where the jacks are.
Peace,
Paul
