Is there a way to record a singing guitar duo (which plays standing)
with any kind of separation?
Sure, but not complete separation. Careful placement of figure-8 mics
can give you pretty good separation between a voice and guitar.
It would be preferable to keep the vocal and the guitar tracks apart
for separate post processing, but to what extent can this be achieved
in a normal (not studio) room environment?
What's a "normal" environment, and what kind of post-processing are you
talking about? If it's in a performance, put pickups on the guitars (if
they don't already have them) and have them work very close to the
vocal mics. I guarantee you'll want to do some post-processing (or at
least real-time equalization) on the guitars.
If you're dreaming about punching in verses or auto-tuning, you
probably won't be very successful unless you record the vocals and
guitars separately (which is not a "normal" situation). If you have to
punch in, punch both the voice and istrument together. That will
eliminate "ghosts."
The best way to record a duo like this is to use a stereo mic setup a
few feet away and experiment with the position of the mic and the
singers to get a good balance, then just let them sing and play. If
they make a mistake, tell them to back up a couple of measures and pick
it up again. Edit when you have enough pieces.
