I'm looking for a microphone for flute -- both for audio recording and
for live sound (I'm aware this means I may need 2). Someone
recommended the AT3031 -- I'm still checking. I'm willing to get
"good" microphones for the purpose. Styles range the gamut -- French
Canadian/Irish ensemble, and also classical flute, also jazz. The
flute involved is a quality instrument, and I want to do justice to the
tone and range.
These are several different requirements.
Also I'd like input on "type" of microphone that would be best
(condenser, etc.). Sorry to be so "basic" here -- I'm researching as
best I can.
For close-miked flute for PA, you probably want a fairly flat dynamic mike
that has a tight pattern and no presence peak. You don't want something
that has a lot of top-end detail because the sense of detail gets very
exaggerated up close like that. You stick an accurate high-grade condenser
mike up there in a PA situation and you mostly get screech and valve noise.
I have always been partial to the EV RE-16 and RE-11 for that application.
You can move around the mike a lot, but the feedback rejection is still
very good. Not too terribly expensive and they turn up cheaply on the used
market. The old EV 664 is another favorite although these days they are
selling for a lot more than they were worth.
For recording work, things are totally different... in the PA world your
goal is to get up close for the best feedback rejection and most isolation
at the expense of tone. For recording work, you can sacrifice everything
else for tone.
For recording work, I'd recommend a good condenser mike, pulled a lot
farther back than you would use for PA. Sometimes I might recommend
a pair of them in stereo. The AT4031 is an okay cheapie... for a little
more money you can get the Josephson C42 which is a good bit cleaner...
for still more money you can look at the Sennheiser MKH40 and Schoeps
grade mikes.
