I leave the end of the center wire sticking out ~ 1/4 inch

Then when cool, trim the end wire flush with the pin.
No kiddin'? It's amazing how many different ideas there are. For a
Switchcraft or Switchcraft look alike RCA I cut the center wire very
short to 1/8" or 1/16". I used to fill the entire hollow tip, but
stopped that a long time ago. It just seems a waste of solder and
heat on the connector. In order to completely fill the tip of an RCA
you have to get the entire connector pretty hot. I get it good and
hot for a short time and fill the tip just so you can see the solder
is very fluid and angle it level so it doesn't all run down. Then I
tin the short center wire, re-melt the center pin solder and insert in
an instant. The solder cup itself is less than 1/8" deep on the
Neutrik RCA. I basically do them both the same. I use a Weller Iron
with I think a 750 degree tip. I could be wrong on the exact temp.
They sell different tips for the model I use and I use the one that
works best for audio connectors. Too hot is just as bad as too cold.
I've never tried anything with a small % of silver in it. 60 / 40%
tin / lead, rosin core is what I've always used. The Gold Neutrik XLR
is really nice to solder to and perfect for audio connectors since the
current is so low although I'm told that higher than 50 ma silver is
the preferred contact material.
