You may have missed the many posts here about problems with Dell
computers for audio. The best part is that it seems to be a different
problem every time, so it's not like there was a specific problem that
could have since been fixed. It sorta seems like they just go their own
way, and, apparently, compatibility suffers (just my own impression, for
whatever that's worth).
I haven't been following the Dell issues, but I may have a bit of an
explanation: different lines of Dell receive different levels of a
homogeneous setup. Dimensions, for instance, are always changing, and
components change all the time. Optiplexes are fairly homogenous,
since they're designed for business installments where you don't want
to have to keep track of a variety of parts. I don't know about the
XPS systems. I would think the Precisions would also be fairly
homogeneous, but you never can tell.
